MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Detectives are in Texas looking for a possible suspect who may be connected with threats made to Hough High School and Bailey Middle School this week, Cornelius police said.
Bailey Middle School was evacuated on Monday due to a bomb threat. Hough was placed on a modified lockdown while investigators cleared the middle school and checked for any devices. Hough was put under a second lockdown the next day due to a non-credible threat, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
"We take these threats very serious and have a possible suspect identified," Cornelius Police said on social media.
Dozens of schools in the Carolinas have received threats in the aftermath of the Apalachee tragedy in Georgia. A CMS spokesperson told WCNC Charlotte at least 40 North Carolina schools investigated threats, while South Carolina officials said they've received over 60 threats in 23 counties since the Georgia shooting.
“The scariest thing about it is that when you hear that there is a modified lockdown, you think it is going to be the same situation where it’s like a joke,” Avery Baker said. “But sometimes I think maybe they are using this as a decoy and they are actually going to do something.”
