CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect in a sexual assault that happened in January is now in police custody after barricading himself inside a building Friday morning.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said 35-year-old Julio Gomez-Avila allegedly broke into an apartment on WT Harris Boulevard on Jan. 12 and raped a woman there.
Police said Gomez-Avila and the victim knew each other, but he still concealed himself.
On Friday morning, Gomez-Avila surrendered himself to officers after a short barricade situation on Glenville Avenue. He is now facing rape, kidnapping and other charges.
He's scheduled to next appear in court on Monday, Feb. 19.
