UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A series of threats made against Weddington Middle School were determined to not be credible, Union County investigators say.
Weddington Middle School notified parents about rumors of threats at the school on Oct. 23. In a message to families, administrators said the school was taking the matter seriously and working with law enforcement to determine where the threats originated.
"None of this information has been deemed credible, but we are continuing to follow all leads," the school's message said.
On Thursday, Union County Public Schools and the Union County Sheriff's Office said multiple tips were looked at, including rumors of a student making threats about using a weapon and having a list with other students' names on it. Detectives were unable to confirm any mentions of a weapon or a list of specific students who could be targeted.
The district said any students connected to the threats would be punished following the student code of conduct.
"As always, safety is extremely important to us and we encourage you to speak to your students about keeping our school safe," a message to families reads.
The incident comes about a month after school districts across the Carolinas reported a spike in threats in the wake of the deadly Apalachee High School shooting in Georgia. Dozens of schools in the Charlotte area reported receiving threats, with investigators arresting students for alleged threats in multiple counties.
