Teen injured in overnight Monroe shooting

The victim showed up at the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

MONROE, N.C. — A 15-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot in Monroe early Wednesday, police said.

Monroe Police responded to a report of gunshots along Burke Street, near Creft Park and Hillcrest Cemetery, a few minutes before 2 a.m. While officers were on their way, they were told a 15-year-old showed up at a hospital after being shot multiple times.

The victim was taken to a Charlotte-area hospital and is expected to recover, according to investigators.

The sound of gunshots woke up neighbor Jalene Vinson. She said she looked out her window and saw multiple people running away, towards Creft Park.

"It had my heart beating because it was just so close," Vinson said.

Vinson has lived in the area her entire life and says violence like this has become much more common in the last few years.

"It is normal. It’s a lot of shootings around here, whether it’s at people or just in the air to scare people," Vinson said. "It makes me feel like I have to protect myself and have to have something to protect my family as well."

Monroe police haven't identified any suspects in the case and no arrests have been made. It's unclear what led up to the shooting.

Anyone with information about this incident or any other case is asked to call the Monroe Police Department at 704-282-4700.
