70-year-old woman killed in Monroe crash, charges expected

A Toyota truck that failed to yield was hit by an oncoming driver and spun out of control into the victim, police said.

MONROE, N.C. — A 70-year-old woman died after she was hit by a truck that was involved in a crash in Monroe on Wednesday, police said.

Monroe Police responded to a crash at the intersection of Concord Avenue and West Phifer Street around 3 p.m. on Sept. 4. Police said a man in a 2011 Toyota Tacoma tried crossing Concord Avenue when he failed to yield the right of way and pulled out in front of another driver. The Toyota truck spun around and crashed into a truck parked outside Duke's Grill.

Sandra Bishop Jennings, 70, was a passenger in the parked truck and was seriously injured as she was getting out of the vehicle, police said. Jennings, who is from Indian Trail, was taken to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center where she died from her injuries.
