Man wanted in Union County shooting caught by US Marshals

Investigators are working to identify and arrest more people in connection with the shooting, the sheriff said.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A South Carolina man was arrested this week in connection with a shooting in Union County in early February, investigators announced

Caleb Garcia of Pageland was arrested on Monday for his role in the shooting of an 18-year-old on Bobwhite Circle on Feb. 3. Deputies say the victim approached a car with multiple people inside, including Garcia, when he was shot multiple times. The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

“The police just kept coming, kept coming, kept coming," Christopher Tyson, who lives nearby, said. "I'm still shocked about it because the very guy that got shot, he goes up and down this road all the time, back and forth to school.”

Detectives were able to identify Garcia as a suspect in the case based on evidence gathered at the scene and other leads. Garcia was captured by U.S. Marshals on Monday and has been extradited back to North Carolina. He's being held in jail in Union County and is charged with one count of attempted murder.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey said more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.

"The arrest of the first suspect, Caleb Garcia, sends a clear message to those involved that our dedicated personnel will not stop until everyone involved has been identified, arrested and charged," Cathey said.

Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
