York County deputies warn of scammers impersonating lieutenant

"It's very frustrating and sometimes, demoralizing," said Lieutenant Bert Lily with the York County Sheriff's Office.

YORK, S.C. — Authorities say it's that time of year when people are in the giving spirit before the holidays, and phone scammers know that. So, they're calling.

"It's very frustrating and sometimes, demoralizing," said Lieutenant Bert Lily with the York County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies warned the community in a YouTube video about scammers impersonating Lily, trying to con people out of their money.

"We've built up a lifetime of trying to do the right thing, trying to earn people's trust to make sure there's no question about who we are," said Lily.

The video starts with employees adlibbing their own words to Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady."

They are asking for the real Bert Lily to stand up, and he does. Then Lily takes questions about what happened and why people should never give information over the phone.

"We actually make physical contact with people. If someone's not home, we leave a card with our number," Lily said in the video.
