CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dozens of Charlotte-area crime survivors are heading to Washington, D.C. for the Crime Survivors Speak March on Washington happening Monday and Tuesday.
Thousands of survivors from across the country are all heading to the nation's capital to call for better support and policies for survivors.
Members of Charlotte organizations like Survivors Nation and One Time Inc. are taking a local issue to the national stage.
Crime survivor advocacy groups in the area have been outspoken about the rise in gun violence in Charlotte, with survivors saying the crime streak is taking a toll on them.
On Monday, they’ll head out to Washington and join a network of thousands of people who are a part of Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice. Their goal is to push for public safety policies that are focused less on incarceration and more on prevention and recovery, and to help the people and communities that are the most harmed by crime and violence.
The Crime Survivors Speak March on Washington kicks off with a welcome reception on Monday.
On Tuesday, the march starts at 11 a.m., followed by a rally, a candlelight vigil and a healing festival at the National Mall. The event ends at 4 p.m. You can learn more about the event and even join virtually by visiting the Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice website.
