As Charlotte's homicide numbers grow, so does the number of families searching for peace

Family and friends came together to honor Jonathan Dockery, who was killed in an apartment in southwest Charlotte in June.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — June 13 is the day things changed for the Dockery Family, a tragedy that still haunts them months later.

"My brother isn’t forgotten," Ericia Dockery said. "We have been struggling the last three months."

"I miss my son so much," said Dianne Freeman, Jonathan's mother.

Jonathan Dockery, 32, was killed in a robbery attempt with an unknown metal instrument in June. Two suspects have been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

"I want them to suffer just like he did," Freeman said.

As the Dockerys continue to seek justice, they are also hoping the violence can stop in Charlotte. They said it's an issue that's ripping many families to pieces.

"Some days I don’t know if I'm going to be ok or if I'm going to miss him," Ericia Dockery said.

The family said while the journey is long, the mission to fight for justice is necessary.

"I know that each family and each and every mother can get through it," Freeman said.

She said lives like Jonathan Dockery's depend on it.

"Keep them alive don’t ever stop talking or thinking about them," Ericia said.
