CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Queen City certainly feels like its growing exponentially if you ask longtime residents, and now, there are statistics to back that up.
The number of people moving to the Charlotte area continues to surge, according to new research released by the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance.
Its data shows about 117 people moved to the Charlotte region every day in between the middle of 2022 and the middle of 2023.
The CRBA said the net migration surge in 2023 was one of the highest in the past 15 years. A line graph shared with WCNC Charlotte showed in 2011, an average closer to 40 people moved to the Charlotte area every day. There was a spike of people in 2016, but that trend lowered in the following years until it spiked in 2022.
"The region’s appeal for its vibrant culture, robust job market, and affordable cost of living make it the perfect place for individuals and families looking for an area that has a balanced and prosperous lifestyle.," the CRBA wrote.
The organization considers the Charlotte region to include the following counties: Alexander, Cabarrus, Chester, Chesterfield Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lancaster, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly, Union, and York. However, the CRBA noted a majority of the growth took place in Mecklenburg and other inner-ring counties.
Charlotte's total is higher than some similar metro areas like Austin, Texas (92), Nashville, Tennessee (67), or Raleigh, North Carolina (59).
As for who is moving to the area, the data showed the majority of people came from Virginia, New York and California.
