CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Staff at the CMS Bishop Spaugh Administrative Center are speaking out about the conditions in the building where they work.
"It's just awful," a staff member, who asked to remain anonymous told WCNC Charlotte's Tradesha Woodard.
Many employees, who also wish to remain anonymous, said the issues they're facing need to be addressed immediately.
"There are trash bins that are keeping leaks from hitting the carpets, and some of them are overflowing and soaking all the carpets," an employee said.
"There are cockroaches, crickets, and there are mice," another employee added.
Employees also shared concerns about the drinking water.
"You can't drink any water from there because it's orange," another staff member said. "It's contaminated."
There have been discussions among employees about the building's smells and whether or not there is mold.
"It smells and reeks of mildew, people are getting sick and going to the doctor," an employee explained.
WCNC Charlotte reached out to CMS. A spokesperson for CMS said all administrative sites are regularly inspected.
The Spaugh Administrative Facility, formerly Spaugh Middle School, has been used as offices and professional development center since 2011. As a result of organizational restructuring, some new teams have been relocated to the facility. These moves have meant that some spaces that were previously used only for training are now occupied by staff members. All CMS schools and administrative sites are regularly inspected. Spaugh was among the facilities that were assessed today for impacts from Hurricane Debby. No issues were found in today’s walk that would negatively impact the use of any occupied spaces. Issues with Spaugh, as with any other CMS facility, are addressed as they are identified; staff members who wish to report an issue should follow standard CMS procedure and contact the Customer Service Center.
