CHARLOTTE, N.C. — President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to campaign in North Carolina later in March and Democrats are hoping some down-ballot races could help Biden pull out a win in the Tar Heel State come November.
Biden lost North Carolina in 2020 by just under 1%, but analysis by the New York Times suggests Mark Robinson, the controversial Republican candidate for governor, could turn voters to the Democratic ticket in 2024.
Robinson has a history of antisemitic comments and opposes abortion and gay rights, which may even sway conservative voters.
With the race for governor at the top of mind for local and national leaders, Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper believes North Carolina is a battleground state that could edge Biden over former President Donald Trump in the 2020 White House rematch.
Biden's campaign has made it clear that North Carolina will be a top priority. As the state quickly grows, many new residents are coming from blue states, making North Carolina one of the most hotly contested races nationwide. But it won't be easy. A Democrat running for president hasn't won the state since Barack Obama in 2008.
