KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A theatre in Kannapolis just got a big upgrade helping enhance the movie experience for viewers. The Gem Theatre has had some renovations made, from a new screen to seating, that are already proving to be a hit.
Kannapolis resident Jim Bear spoke to WCNC Charlotte's Myles Harris about the theatre's upgrades and rich history.
“Everything was really good in a really historical building," Bear said.
His family agrees it doesn't matter the film being shown. “Regardless of what's playing, regardless of what's going on ... it's an experience overall.
The Gem Theatre reopened in May after getting some upgrades, including new cushion seating, surround Dolby sound, a new white screen and more.
Raquel Jorgenson lives in Kannapolis and said visiting the Gem Theatre is an experience in and of itself.
“It's so history-rich and so much more than just going to the theater," Jorgenson said.
Gary Mills is the Director of the Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department and spends a lot of time in the theatre.
“When people come in and they see the renovations that we've done, I think people come back more," Mills said. "There are people driving by other theaters to come to ours just because of the movie experience."
Every film starts with a short video highlighting the history of the Gem Theatre.
The upgrades are proving to be a hit, with 42,000 tickets sold since the theatre's reopening on May 14.
The hope is for the theatre to stay true to its name for more decades to come.
“It was a very important piece of history to keep the Gem alive and to see what we maintained from the history, but we can [also] provide for the future," Mills said.
