'Just a great kid to be around': Fort Mill HS basketball coach remembers teen who drowned in Lake Wylie

Logan Gurley's body was found in Lake Wylie about an hour after he was reported missing.

TEGA CAY, S.C. — Family and friends of a Fort Mill teen who drowned in Lake Wylie continue to mourn and support continues to come in for Logan Gurley.

“The community support of Fort Mill ... just [the] Fort Mill, Tega Cay area has just been tremendous,” Myron Lowery, Head Basketball Coach at Fort Mill High School, told WCNC Charlotte's Nick Sturdivant.

Gurley, 16, drowned in Lake Wylie on Monday.

Investigators said Gurley was swimming with friends when he went under the surface and went missing.

“[Logan] was such a great young man, very well-liked, great teammate, just a great kid to be around,” Lowery said.

Lowery coached Gurley and said the rising sophomore was soft-spoken, but stood out on the basketball court. Gurley was a Fort Mill High School boys’ basketball team forward.

“I was really impressed the first time I met him as an eighth grader," Lowery shared. "I took him under my wing and looked over him."

Lowery said Gurley had a shot at starting for the varsity team and he expected him to become a big contributor to the team this upcoming season. He continues to check in on Gurley’s family and his players during this tough time.

“This is a long-term grieving process because it’s the initial shock of it all,” Lowery said.

A spokesperson with the Fort Mill School District confirmed that Gurley was a student at Fort Mill High School.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim and those involved," Tega Cay Police Chief Crosby said. "Please hug your loved ones closer tonight, as a family in our community will go to sleep without a member of theirs."
