'Beta males and snowflake complainers': Monroe Mayor Robert Burns continues to dodge questions after controversial Facebook post

People in Monroe are questioning the city's mayor after making comments on Facebook that some call disrespectful.

MONROE, N.C. — Monroe residents are questioning the city's mayor after he made comments on Facebook that some are calling disrespectful.

Mayor Robert Burns referred to some people as "narcissistic beta males" and "snowflake complainers" in a post on Facebook earlier this month.

Several WCNC Charlotte viewers reached out and said the comments were irresponsible and, as an elected official, it was wrong for Burns to say this about a group of people. Many people also responded to the Facebook post and expressed dislike for the mayor's choice of words.

Shortly after discovering the post, WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker reached out to Mayor Burns and spoke with him over the phone about his choice of words. Burns said he didn't have time for an in-person or Zoom interview.  Walker asked Burns if he could record the phone conversation, but Burns then declined comment.

Burns added he didn't have time to listen or deal with negative comments.

On Thursday, Walker attempted to speak to Burns again about his comments at the Monroe City Council meeting. The Mayor responded with "no comment" to every question that was asked.

Here is the exchange that took place between Austin Walker and Robert Burns:

“Do you have a few seconds where I can ask you a few questions," Walker asked.

“No," Burns said.

“The main one is do you regret what you said on social media," Walker asked.

“No comment," Burns said.

“What about the individuals you called beta males and snowflakes," Walker asked. "Do you think as a public official that is respectful and right?”

“No comment," Burns said.

"Do you regret it," Walker asked.

“No comment," Burns said.

"Should there be a comment to the people you represent," Walker asked.

“No comment," Burns said.

“Looking forward, if you disagree with something will you respond the same way on social media," Walker asked.

“No comment," Burns said.

After the exchange, Walker was removed from the city council chambers and Burns did not answer any of the questions.
