Shelbie Smith was found dead in her home on June 1. Her death was mysterious and investigated as a possible homicide.

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A Statesville woman who was found dead in her home this summer died accidentally, investigators announced on Friday.

Shelbie Lynn Smith, 33 was found dead at her home on Hickory Avenue on June 1, a short time after a neighbor found her 4-year-old son on nearby Wilson Lee Boulevard. When officers arrived at the home with the child, Smith was unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Statesville Police Department investigated Smith's death as a homicide. Smith's mother pleaded for anyone with information to come forward

"I know she's gone but sometimes I'm still waiting for her to come around the corner," Cassie Smith said.

A pathologist determined her death was accidental, investigators said. No charges will be filed in connection with the case.

"We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Ms. Smith’s family and loved ones during this challenging time and kindly ask the community to respect their privacy," the police department said in a statement.
