CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More than 125,000 South Carolina voters cast their ballots on the first day of early voting, state elections officials said.
The number easily surpassed the previous record of 70,100, which was set in the 2022 election, according to the South Carolina State Election Commission.
"We are thrilled to see voters embracing the convenience of early voting, and we are anticipating a significant turnout for this election," Howie Knapp, executive director of the SEC, said.
North Carolina also reported a record on the first day of early voting, with 353,000 people showing up on Oct. 17.
Early voting runs through Saturday, Nov. 2 in South Carolina. Polls will be closed on Sunday, Oct. 27. All early voting locations are open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Voters will be asked to show a photo ID when checking in to vote.
