CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wells Fargo announced it will not renew its title sponsorship of the PGA's annual tournament at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, ending a 20-plus year run as the event's presenting brand.
The Wells Fargo Championship started as the Wachovia Championship in 2003. It was renamed as the Wells Fargo Championship in 2011 when the bank did away with the Wachovia name. In 2019, Wells Fargo reached a five-year extension as title sponsor of the event. That deal expires after the 2024 tournament.
"We are incredibly proud of the 20+ year history of the Championship," Wells Fargo said in a statement. "The tournament has generated significant local impact and delighted golf fans in Charlotte and across the country."
The event has become known for its charitable contributions, generating over $30 million for foundations across the Carolinas. The 2023 championship raised a record amount of donations, delivering nearly $2.5 million to Charlotte-area organizations, including Levine Children's Hospital, First Tee of Greater Charlotte and Teach for America.
The 2024 Wells Fargo Championship will be held May 6-12 at Quail Hollow.
While Wells Fargo won't continue its sponsorship of Charlotte's premier golf event, the bank has made significant investments in the Charlotte area. The bank recently announced upwards of $500 million in investments over the next five years to upgrade workspaces in Charlotte, which is home to its largest employee base nationwide.
