CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ahead of Tuesday night's game, players and coaches from the Charlotte Knights wore Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department caps to honor the four law enforcement officers killed in a shooting in east Charlotte on Monday.
The team received the hats from the police department in time to wear them for batting practice and during pregame ceremonies. Those in the dugout could also wear the CMPD caps during the game.
The Knights also held a moment of silence to remember officers Joshua Eyer, Alden Elliott, Sam Poloche, and Thomas Weeks Jr., who were killed in the incident.
April 30 also marked the fifth anniversary of the UNC Charlotte shooting that killed Reed Parlier and Riley Howell. The two were also honored during the moment of silence at Truist Field.
In addition, the team painted "CMPD" and "USMS" on the field in recognition of the police department, and the U.S. Marshals Service, where three of the victims in Monday's shooting served.
