Charlotte trades PJ Washington to Dallas for two players, including Steph Curry's brother

The Hornets made a huge trade deadline move Thursday, sending PJ Washington to the Mavericks for Grant Williams, Seth Curry and a future first-round pick.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Hornets made another big trade deadline deal Thursday, sending forward P.J. Washington to the Dallas Mavericks for two Charlotte natives and a future first-round pick, according to multiple reports

Charlotte is sending Washington to Dallas for Grant Williams and Seth Curry, the younger brother of NBA icon Steph Curry. They're also expected to receive a lightly protected first-round pick in 2027, according to multiple NBA insiders.

Washington was rumored to be on the trade block heading into Thursday's NBA trade deadline and he was the second player sent on his way by general manager Mitch Kupchak. Gordon Hayward was traded to Oklahoma City for two players, and last month, the Hornets traded Terry Rozier to Miami as the organization looks to reshape its roster behind rookie star Brandon Miller

Miles Bridges, who had been linked to a potential trade with the Suns, exercised his trade veto power and will remain in Charlotte for the rest of the season. His future in Charlotte remains unclear after that, but the team could keep him long-term or perform a sign-and-trade with another franchise that maximizes Bridges' salary under an unusual circumstance in his current contract.

Grant Williams was a pivotal piece during the Boston Celtics' run to the NBA Finals in 2022 but has struggled lately in Dallas.

Williams, who grew up in Charlotte and played high school basketball at Providence Day, helped lead the Celtics to the Eastern Conference finals and NBA finals in the previous two seasons. He signed a four-year contract with Dallas as part of a sign-and-trade last summer. He averaged just over 8 points and 3 rebounds in 47 games for Dallas. He is essentially trading places with Washington, who Dallas hopes can fill the "3 and D" role they envisioned for Williams.

Curry has seen limited playing time with the Mavericks this year, averaging just 4.4 points per game in 35 appearances. With LaMelo Ball and Cody Martin in the mix, he will likely be a rotational player with the Hornets.
