MATTHEWS, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the nature of the charges.
Months after a deadly crash shut down part of a road in Matthews, police say a man is now facing charges.
On Friday, the Matthews Police Department announced the arrest of 26-year-old Nima Justin Behrouzjou of Waxhaw. He was taken into custody on Nov. 4, 2024.
Behrouzjou is now charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired, speeding, not having an operator's license, and reckless driving with wanton disregard.
The crash, which shut down part of Monroe Road, claimed the life of 20-year-old Ramon Alberto Martinez of Charlotte. He was declared dead at the scene.
The crash happened on August 23, 2024, between North Carolina 51 and Galleria Boulevard around 7:30 a.m. Multiple agencies responded, including Matthews Fire and Medic. In addition to Martinez' death, another person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
A witness who was at a nearby QuikTrip gas station said the driver of a blue car pulled out into Monroe Road and was hit by an oncoming car.
Matthews Police said the road reopened around 10:30 a.m. that day.
