CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A crash is causing major backups on Interstate 485 near Interstate 77 in south Charlotte Friday afternoon.
Two of three lanes of the inner loop of I-485 were blocked due to the crash at mile marker 67, which is just before the interchange with I-77. The crash happened around 11:30 a.m.
Charlotte DOT said crews reopened the road just before 1 p.m. WCNC Charlotte chief meteorologist Brad Panovich was caught up in the traffic jam and warned drivers to avoid the area.
This crash is close to where a deadly crash shut down a portion of I-485's outer loop Thursday afternoon. North Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed one person was killed in that crash.
Friday's commutes have been messy in Charlotte thanks to the remnants of Nicole pushing through the Carolinas. A jack-knifed tractor-trailer caused big problems on I-85 during morning rush hour. With more rain expected Friday afternoon, the drive home could also be affected by bad weather.
