MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Six months after Mooresville's license plate agency closed, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced a new one will be opening.
NCDMV announced Thursday that it will reopen a license plate agency on Aug. 20 in Mooresville. The previous license plate office closed on Feb. 14 when the operator's contract with the state expired. In the meantime, Mooresville residents have used license plate offices in Concord, Huntersville, Kannapolis, Salisbury and Statesville.
The new Mooresville license plate office is located at 186 North Broad Street, Suite 12. The office will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will be closed on state holidays.
North Carolina license plate agencies are under the NCDMV umbrella but are managed by private businesses.
The announcement comes as DMV offices statewide have experienced long wait times. NCDMV has acknowledged the problem, saying it's short-staffed, but the agency says it will need approval from the General Assembly for more funding to hire more workers.
Meanwhile, the state has installed self-serve kiosks at select Harris Teeter stores for customers to handle transactions without going to a DMV office. One of those kiosks is in Mecklenburg County, with NCDMV announcing plans to add three more by the end of 2024.
