One killed, two hurt in crash on I-485 in south Charlotte, Medic says

The crash happened Tuesday morning on the outer loop at Providence Road.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was killed and two others were injured in a serious crash on the I-485 outer loop at Providence Road Tuesday morning, Medic said.

The crash happened around 10 a.m. Medic said the two people who were hurt were rushed to Atrium-CMC in Charlotte with serious injuries.

Officers located a 2008 Lincoln Town Car and 2018 Honda Pilot that had been involved in the crash. The occupants of the Honda were taken for medical care. The driver of the Lincoln Town Car was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Drivers were asked to avoid the area while emergency crews cleared the scene. State troopers have not said what caused the crash at this time.

The victim has not yet been identified by authorities.

The preliminary investigation shows that the Lincoln Town Car was traveling north on Providence Road when the vehicle ran off the road to the right. Officials said the vehicle continued traveling in the grass for several hundred feet with no braking before driving off the embankment.

The Lincoln Town Car then went airborne for several feet, landing on I-485 outer loop, officials said. The car faced perpendicular to the flow of traffic, directly in the path of the Honda.

The Lincoln Town Car was then struck on the driver's side by the Honda, causing the Honda to spin and roll over onto its roof. Officials said the Lincoln Town Car then spun from the impact, coming to rest along a concrete barrier. The driver was trapped inside.

The road conditions were wet at the time of the crash, and officials do not believe speed or impairment were factors. Detectives are working to determine if the driver of the Lincoln Town Car may have had a medical issue while driving.

Danny Gurley, a truck driver on I-485, told NBC Charlotte he saw a car on Providence Road fly into the air, landing on the interstate.

"Airborne, like a movie, literally like a movie," Gurley said. "I could not believe what I was seeing."

Gurley told NBC Charlotte he worked to save a couple from a vehicle that was on fire, but it was too late for the person in the car that came off Providence Road.

Investigators are now working on piecing together what caused that car to go off the road.

"All the police officers that first came didn't believe because there [were] no tracks on the hill, but that's because she cleared the hill," Gurley said. "There's a hill. She didn't go down the hill. She cleared the hill."

This case is being investigated by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Departments Major Crash Investigation Unit. Any witnesses are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or Detective Justin Kupfer at 704-432-2169.
