A Charlotte man charged in an ongoing homicide investigation was reportedly released from jail in July because of a clerical error.
Mecklenburg County court officials confirmed to WCNC Charlotte that 31-year-old Laquan Hoe was able to post bail on July 15, 2024. He was taken back into custody a week later.
Officials said Hoe wasn't mistakenly released on the murder charge he faces. Instead, a clerical mix-up happened involving other charges he faces in the court system.
According to the court, Hoe is also charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, discharging a weapon into an occupied property, felony conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or seriously injure, and possession of a firearm by a felon, all in a 2024 case. He had a first appearance for those charges on July 2 and was ordered to be held without bond for them.
However, court officials said a probation violation report was generated for Hoe for an earlier case from 2022. In that case, he was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He was back in court for a hearing on July 5 with a different judge, who ordered a $10,000 secured bond for Hoe on that offense.
This is the point where court officials said the clerical error occurred. The clerk reportedly entered the secured bond for the 2024 charges instead of the 2022 parole violation. Hoe was then able to post bail because of the error.
Hoe is accused of killing 30-year-old Aundrey Brown, who died a month after a shooting in the uptown area. Brown and three other people were wounded in a shooting along North Tryon Street on June 8, 2024. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the shooting evolved from an argument outside of a business.
The other three victims were treated for less severe injuries. Hoe was arrested early in August 2024, roughly a month after Brown died.
