CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was killed in a shooting near Uptown on Tuesday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.
Witnesses, including the family of the victim, tell WCNC Charlotte it all started Monday when a group of kids got into a fight at Seigle Point Apartments on Winding Path Way, and one of their parents got involved.
They say, Tuesday morning, that parent was gunned down right in the parking lot.
CMPD, which has not confirmed the circumstances surrounding the shooting, said the shots rang out around 9 a.m. Tuesday. When they got on the scene, they found an abandoned vehicle and multiple shell casings at the apartment complex. The department then got a second call at North Davidson Street and East 12th Street, just a few blocks away from Winding Path Way, where officers found a man who had been shot. The person died on the scene.
That person has since been identified as 32-year-old Jamario Caldwell.
"It’s unfortunate that people are resolving issues with gunfire that are then turning into homicides that have real victims behind the scenes," CMPD Maj. Bret Balamucki said. “It’s not just the person dead, but it’s the person’s family, their children, their friends, you know, the impact on the entire community.”
Those living in the area tell WCNC Charlotte they were startled by the sound of gunfire and hope to see a suspect brought into custody soon.
“It was just, really jarring to me to kind of experience that," Carlos Jackson, who lives in the area, said.
“I heard four shots, pow, pow, pow, pow. And, I heard some screeching of a car," another resident who preferred to remain anonymous said. "Now, police have closed off the entire street for a whole block. They’re putting yellow tape everywhere.”
There have been more than 80 homicides in the city this year, according to CMPD.
Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Witnesses can also call 704-432-TIPS to speak directly with homicide detectives.
