17-year-old charged with northeast Charlotte homicide

Two other people were also shot. Detectives are working to understand how the three victims are connected.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 17-year-old was arrested in connection with a deadly shooting in northeast Charlotte last week,  Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said. 

Officers responded to a shooting near the intersection of Tom Hunter Road and North Tryon Street around 10 p.m. on Oct. 3. When officers arrived, they found 22-year-old Derrick Answon Baker suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic. 

Shortly afterward, CMPD said a second victim was found shot about a quarter-mile from where Baker was killed. CMPD said that person, who is under 18, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A third victim showed up at a nearby hospital with minor injuries around 11:30 p.m.

CMPD announced it identified a 17-year-old as a suspect in the case. The teen, who hasn't been identified due to their age, was charged with murder after being arrested on Oct. 4. The suspect is being held by the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

This homicide happened about two miles away from a scene where officers shot a man on West Sugar Creek Road earlier Thursday night.
