LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — The license plate office in Lincolnton will close next week, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced.
Matthew Craig has operated the license plate agency located on East Main Street since December 2020. The office will close at 5 p.m. on Sept. 19 when his contract with NCDMV expires. A new agency will open with a new contractor at a later date, NCDMV said.
In the meantime, drivers in Lincolnton will have to drive out of town for license plate service. NCDMV has tag offices in Conover, Gastonia, Hickory and Mooresville that are open Monday through Friday.
License plate agencies offer vehicle registration services, as well as plate renewals, title transactions and duplicate registrations. There are currently 124 license plate offices operating statewide, according to NCDMV.
The news comes a few weeks after NCDMV announced plans to expand self-service kiosks in Harris Teeter stores statewide. There are plans to have at least six kiosks at stores in Mecklenburg County. These kiosks allow drivers to renew registrations, pay property taxes and even renew driver's licenses. The purpose is to give residents access to DMV services without having to visit a DMV in person.
