Man dies in hospital after north Charlotte shooting, CMPD reports

It happened along Catalina Avenue near West 28th Street on Friday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said a man died after a shooting unfolded in the north part of the city Friday afternoon.

Medic first confirmed it responded to Catalina Avenue near West 28th Street around 3:30 p.m. At the time, the agency said the victim was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

The victim was identified on Sunday as Devin Rashad Jeter.

CMPD later shut down that block of Catalina Avenue for an investigation. The department followed up with a post on X just four minutes later, Jeter died at the hospital.

CMPD later shared more information during a news briefing at the scene. CMPD said the man was in his early 30s and that the early investigation had led police to believe the victim and suspect may have been familiar with each other. Officers said the shooting appears to have been the result of a dispute, with the suspect firing multiple rounds.

This homicide investigation marked the fifth one within Charlotte in the last three days and the third such case within the past 48 hours. On Tuesday, police said a man was found shot to death in southwest Charlotte, while another man was killed near businesses along Little Rock Road on Wednesday. A woman was also killed in a shooting Wednesday night, and a suspect was arrested the next day. Also on Thursday, CMPD reported a man was shot and killed at a gas station in the west part of the city early that morning.
