CMPD: Suspect pulls out knife while stealing items at Midtown Target

Police say the suspect was stealing several items and then pulled a knife out. It’s not the first time NBC Charlotte has reported at a robbery at that Target store.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A popular Target store was robbed in the middle of the day.

It happened around 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Target on Metropolitan Avenue. It's the latest in a string of robberies at that same store.

Police say the suspect was stealing several items and then pulled a knife out. It’s not the first time NBC Charlotte has reported at a robbery at that Target store.

The swarms of people around the busy shopping area make some shoppers feel more comfortable.

“I've always felt very safe," said shopper, Elizabeth Harris. "This is a great shopping area, it's always busy and populated."

However, Harris says populated areas also have a downside. She believes the armed robbery at the Target store is a sign of the growing pains in the Queen City.

“It’s definitely unnerving," Harris said. "I think we're starting to see that as Charlotte gets bigger."

Police say the suspect was stealing several items, including a cell phone and camera equipment, when he pulled out a knife.

“It literally can happen anywhere,” Harris said.

NBC Charlotte has reported on other recent robberies at the same Target store in recent months.

Earlier this year, Unique Glover was charged for robbing the store on Metropolitan Avenue. His jail records show he’s been arrested at least 18 times, including on multiple robbery charges. Police say he was stealing electronics, and when confronted by security, he implied he had a gun. That crime also happened around 2 p.m.

At the time, NBC Charlotte spoke to a Petco employee who works nearby.

“We all park in the parking deck and it's dark and we leave generally at 9:30 at night so it can be a little scary,” the employee previously said.

Before that, the Target store was robbed in November. Police say Kevin Osborne robbed the store by pulling a knife on employees.

Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt in the latest case. Harris says it’s a teachable moment for her and her children.

“I'm telling my kids you can't take your safety for granted, whether it's walking in a parking lot or in a store,” Harris said.

No arrests have been made in the latest case. Police say it’s an active and ongoing investigation.
