CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that happened Saturday night in east Charlotte.
According to CMPD, the crash happened at the intersection of Rosehaven Drive and Central Avenue in east Charlotte at around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Once officers got onto the scene they found 2012 Lexus RX350 and a seriously injured pedestrian, later identified as 34-year-old Arnoldo Mendez Perez, in the roadway. Perez was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.
Mariano de Jesus Mendez Perez said his brother was on his way home from the store and this is a devastating loss for their family, especially his 11-year-old son, now left without a father.
“My brother was a humble, hard-working, happy person,” Mariano de Jesus Mendez Perez said.
Loved ones say Central Avenue is a safety concern.
"Central Ave... It's very busy for the people," a family friend said. "It's a big problem."
Police are asking drivers to avoid the area and take an alternate route.
The incident is one of at least three crashes involving pedestrians in the greater Charlotte area since Saturday:
