Pedestrian hit, killed in northeast Charlotte

The incident is one of at least three crashes involving pedestrians in the greater Charlotte area since Saturday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pedestrian was hit and killed in northeast Charlotte, police said, announcing the second deadly crash involving a pedestrian Monday morning.

The crash happened at the intersection of West Mallard Creek Church Road and Mallard Glen Drive in University City. The crash happened around 7 a.m. Medic initially said one person was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries before Charlotte-Mecklenburg police confirmed the victim died from their injuries.

Shavonne said she was waiting for her daughter's school bus when it happened, and she called 911.

"I was just in a state of shock," she said, "Just hollering and screaming… all I could tell them was that somebody got hit off a skateboard."

CMPD identified him as 20-year-old Jalen Donovan Worthy.

Shavonne said she saw him try to make it across the street.

"One car almost hit him and blew the horn," she said. "So I'm thinking he is going to turn around and it was like slow motion but he just kept on going. As he kept going to cross over, I saw him.. and a car coming down."

That's when she said Worthy was hit.

Mallard Creek Church Road was closed while police investigate the crash and work to determine what happened.

This road was being used as a detour for drivers to get around backups on Interstate 85 after a pedestrian was hit and killed near Concord Mills Boulevard and I-485 very early Monday. That crash closed the southbound side of I-85 and led to miles-long backups for drivers coming into Charlotte from areas like Concord, Kannapolis and Salisbury.

The road is a safety concern for some in the area who would like to see lighting and a midway crosswalk point added.

"They might need to put some cautionary lights because there are a lot of people who cross over right here," Shavonne said.

"You have cars coming so fast on both sides that it does not leave much room for you to make a mistake," Gia Ferreira said while walking with her child.
